Sculptor & ceramic artist
Hi, I’m Natasja!
At the heart of my practice is the idea of protecting something fragile, whether that’s a memory, a person’s identity or creativity itself.
Inspired by Renaissance armour, I create wearable ceramic sculptures that explore the relationship between fragility and protection. I’m drawn to the contradiction of using clay, a material so easily broken, to create something that resembles armour. Each piece is moulded directly to the body, capturing its form at a particular moment in time.
The surfaces tell stories through sculpted illustrations and delicate relief patterns, drawing inspiration from my great-grandmother’s lace from the 1930s, childhood stories and personal memories. These details explore the things we hold dear, and what it means to lose, preserve or rediscover them.
My own journey with ceramics began as a way of rediscovering my creativity. In many ways, wrapping myself in clay became a way of protecting the very thing I had found again.
